Quick! What does SEMP Fitness stand for? If you said Spiritual, Emotional, Mental, and Physical Fitness, then you’re correct! Last post, we talked about the concept we use here at Vanbar Fitness. This concept of SEMP Fitness, in bringing everything together and making sure all of our aspects of fitness are in balance. Our focus in this post will be on the first component: Spiritual Fitness. Now, don’t get scared away when you see the word ‘Spiritual’. We’re referring to who you are as a person here. We’re referencing your inner self. Ever have a tough decision to make, such as whether to eat that piece of cake in the fridge or eat that salad instead? You may hear this still voice on the inside of you trying to pull you in a certain direction. You may desire that piece of cake, but that voice is telling you tell grab the salad. That voice is inside all of us. It’s our conscious speaking to us that tries to get our attention, to do the right thing or make the right choices. Whether we choose to listen to that voice, is on us. That conscious though, that inner voice, is something that needs to be feed, and renewed on a regular basis. We’re talking about a daily basis here, if not multiple times a day. How do we feed our inner self, our soul? One way to do so is to spend your time in a state of prayer, reflection, or meditation. It doesn’t matter what your beliefs are, but take some time to connect with your soul and ensure that your mind and body are one. They should operate as a cohesive unit. In order for that to happen you need to take time each day just to be still. Another way to connect with your inner self and help with being still is just breathing. Very simple. This is especially helpful in the morning when you have thousands upon thousands of thoughts rushing in your head of all the things that you need to get done for the day. Set the tone right for the day by just taking a few minutes to focus on your nice slow inhales, and exhales. If you haven’t tried yoga, it is very beneficial in helping with your breathing techniques. While there isn’t a set order of which one comes first in the SEMP Fitness model, Spiritual Fitness cares a bit more weight. After all, if you aren’t in control of your inner self, how are able to strengthen any other aspect of you? So if you don’t do anything right now for your Spiritual Fitness, start today by just taking a few minutes out to pray, mediate, reflect, breath, or be still. Either of these is a great start in helping to connect with your inner self, with your soul. Once you have one of those methods down, add in a second. If you already do one, great! You’re on the right path. Keep it up and take it to the next level by adding in at least one of the other methods and you’ll see yourself develop to newer heights! Be Greater!
